A separation or tear in the innermost layer of an artery that can obstruct blood flow.
Full Definition
An intimal flap is a pathological condition where the intima (innermost arterial layer) becomes separated from the underlying media, creating a mobile tissue fragment that can obstruct vessel lumen. This condition commonly occurs during arterial interventions, following balloon angioplasty, or as a result of arterial dissection. Intimal flaps can cause flow limitation, thrombosis, or complete vessel occlusion, often requiring surgical repair through patch angioplasty, bypass grafting, or stent placement to restore normal circulation.
