Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) employs magnetic resonance imaging principles to create detailed vascular images through various techniques including time-of-flight, phase-contrast, and contrast-enhanced methods. MRA avoids ionizing radiation and can be performed without contrast in patients with renal insufficiency, though gadolinium-enhanced studies provide superior image quality. It excels at evaluating carotid disease, renal artery stenosis, and peripheral arterial disease, though it may overestimate stenosis severity and has limitations in patients with metallic implants.
