revascularization

Surgical or endovascular restoration of blood flow to ischemic tissue through bypass grafting or angioplasty.

Full Definition

The process of reestablishing adequate blood supply to tissues suffering from ischemia due to arterial occlusion or stenosis. This can be achieved through open surgical techniques such as bypass grafting using autogenous vein or prosthetic conduits, or through minimally invasive endovascular methods including balloon angioplasty, stenting, or atherectomy. The choice of revascularization strategy depends on anatomic factors, patient comorbidities, and the urgency of intervention. Successful revascularization results in symptom relief, tissue preservation, and improved quality of life.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred over 'revasularization' (common misspelling). Use specific terms when possible (bypass, angioplasty).

In Context

  • "The patient requires urgent revascularization to prevent limb loss." — Consultation note
  • "Endovascular revascularization was successful with restoration of palpable pulses." — Discharge summary
