Stent fracture is a mechanical complication of endovascular interventions characterized by structural disruption of the stent framework, ranging from single strut fractures to complete stent separation. This phenomenon is more commonly observed in locations subject to external compression or repeated mechanical stress, such as the superficial femoral artery or areas crossing joints. Stent fractures can lead to restenosis, acute thrombosis, or vessel perforation due to sharp metal fragments. Risk factors include stent overlapping, vessel tortuosity, calcification, and mechanical stress from muscular compression. Detection typically requires careful fluoroscopic examination or CT angiography, as routine duplex ultrasound may miss subtle fractures.
