Transcutaneous oximetry

A non-invasive test measuring oxygen tension through the skin to assess tissue perfusion and wound healing potential.

Full Definition

Transcutaneous oximetry (TcPO2) measures the partial pressure of oxygen diffusing through intact skin using heated electrodes placed on the tissue surface. Values above 40-50 mmHg generally indicate adequate perfusion for wound healing, while values below 20-30 mmHg suggest poor healing potential. This test is particularly valuable for determining amputation levels, assessing wound healing probability, and evaluating perfusion in areas where standard pressure measurements may be unreliable, such as in diabetic patients with calcified vessels.

Usage note: Abbreviate as TcPO2 after first use. Always include mmHg units when reporting values.
