The chemical weathering process whereby iron sulfide minerals (primarily pyrite FeS₂) react with water and oxygen to produce sulfuric acid and ferric hydroxide precipitate. This reaction is a primary generator of acid mine drainage and occurs both during active mining and decades afterward.
