CAGE Questionnaire
Also written as: CAGE
A brief four-question screening tool used to identify potential alcohol problems in clinical settings.
Full Definition
The CAGE questionnaire is a widely used alcohol screening instrument consisting of four yes/no questions: Have you ever felt you should Cut down on drinking? Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking? Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking? Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover (Eye-opener)? Two or more positive responses suggest possible alcohol problems requiring further assessment. Despite its brevity and ease of use, the CAGE has limitations in detecting early-stage problems and may be less effective with certain populations.
