Full Definition

A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump surgically implanted to help the left ventricle pump blood to the rest of the body in patients with severe heart failure. LVADs can be used as a bridge to heart transplantation, as destination therapy for patients ineligible for transplant, or as a bridge to recovery in some cases. Modern continuous-flow devices have significantly improved outcomes compared to earlier pulsatile devices. Patient management requires specialized anticoagulation protocols and monitoring for device-specific complications such as pump thrombosis, bleeding, and infection.
