Full Definition

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an advanced intracoronary imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to generate extremely high-resolution cross-sectional images of coronary arteries. OCT provides superior resolution compared to IVUS, allowing detailed assessment of vessel wall morphology, plaque characteristics, stent strut apposition, and neointimal coverage. The technique is particularly valuable for detecting thin-cap fibroatheromas, assessing stent deployment quality, and identifying complications such as edge dissection or tissue prolapse that may not be visible on conventional angiography.

Usage note: Always capitalize as OCT; distinguish from optical coherence angiography (OCTA) used in ophthalmology.
