Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is an interventional cardiology procedure performed via cardiac catheterization to treat coronary artery stenosis. The procedure involves threading a guide wire through the blocked artery and advancing a balloon catheter to the site of stenosis, where the balloon is inflated to compress atherosclerotic plaque against the arterial wall, thereby restoring blood flow. While PTCA was historically performed as a standalone procedure, it is now typically combined with stent placement (percutaneous coronary intervention) to reduce the risk of restenosis.
