A stress testing protocol is a systematic approach to evaluating cardiovascular function and detecting coronary artery disease by subjecting the heart to increased workload through exercise or pharmacologic agents. Common protocols include the Bruce protocol for treadmill testing, which involves progressive increases in speed and incline, and pharmacologic protocols using agents like dobutamine, adenosine, or dipyridamole. The testing may be combined with imaging modalities such as echocardiography, nuclear perfusion imaging, or cardiac magnetic resonance. Protocols specify contraindications, termination criteria, and safety monitoring requirements. Results are interpreted based on symptoms, hemodynamic response, ECG changes, and imaging findings.
