Microtubule-associated protein that forms pathological aggregates in Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies.

Full Definition

Tau is a microtubule-associated protein normally involved in maintaining neuronal cytoskeletal structure and axonal transport. In neurodegenerative diseases, tau becomes hyperphosphorylated and aggregates into paired helical filaments, forming neurofibrillary tangles characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Tau pathology also defines other conditions collectively termed 'tauopathies,' including frontotemporal dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, and corticobasal degeneration. The pattern and distribution of tau deposits help distinguish between these disorders and correlate with clinical symptoms better than amyloid plaques.
