word salad

Severely disorganized speech in which words and phrases are combined incoherently, lacking logical connections or meaning.

Full Definition

Word salad is a severe form of disorganized speech characterized by a mixture of words and phrases that lack logical connections, coherent meaning, or grammatical structure. This symptom represents a significant disruption in thought organization and language processing, making communication incomprehensible to listeners. Word salad is most commonly associated with severe psychotic disorders, particularly schizophrenia, but can also occur in other conditions such as severe mania, dementia, or aphasia following brain injury. Unlike flight of ideas or loose associations, word salad lacks any discernible logical thread or thematic connection between elements.

Usage

Usage note: Use hyphenated form; avoid in patient-facing documents due to potentially offensive connotations.
