Full Definition

Gated SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) is a nuclear cardiology technique that synchronizes image acquisition with the patient's cardiac cycle using ECG gating. This allows simultaneous assessment of myocardial perfusion and left ventricular function from a single acquisition. The cardiac cycle is divided into multiple frames (typically 8 or 16), enabling evaluation of wall motion, wall thickening, and calculation of ejection fraction. Gated SPECT provides valuable information for distinguishing attenuation artifacts from true perfusion defects and offers comprehensive cardiac assessment in patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease.
