Paramagnetic contrast agent used in cardiac MRI to enhance tissue characterization and detect scar tissue.

Full Definition

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are paramagnetic compounds used in cardiac MRI to improve image quality and enable tissue characterization. These agents shorten T1 relaxation time and accumulate in areas of increased extracellular space, such as regions of myocardial fibrosis or acute injury. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging performed 10-15 minutes after contrast injection can identify myocardial scar, acute infarction, infiltrative disease, and various cardiomyopathies based on characteristic enhancement patterns. Different gadolinium formulations exist, with macrocyclic agents preferred in patients with reduced kidney function due to lower risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
