Full Definition

Myocardial blood flow (MBF) quantification measures absolute myocardial perfusion values in milliliters per minute per gram of myocardial tissue. This advanced technique, primarily performed with cardiac PET using tracers like rubidium-82 or N-13 ammonia, provides quantitative assessment beyond relative perfusion imaging. Normal resting MBF ranges from 0.8-1.2 mL/min/g, with stress values typically 3-4 times higher. Reduced myocardial flow reserve (stress/rest ratio) indicates microvascular dysfunction even in absence of epicardial stenosis. Emerging MRI techniques also enable MBF quantification using arterial spin labeling or first-pass perfusion analysis.
