Full Definition

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an intravascular imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to generate high-resolution cross-sectional images of coronary arteries. With approximately 10-fold higher resolution than IVUS (10-20 μm vs 100-200 μm), OCT provides detailed visualization of plaque microstructure, thin fibrous caps, macrophages, and stent strut coverage. OCT requires contrast injection or blood displacement for optimal imaging due to light absorption by red blood cells. It is particularly valuable for assessing vulnerable plaque characteristics, guiding complex percutaneous interventions, and evaluating stent healing and neoatherosclerosis.

Usage

Usage note: Specify fibrous cap thickness in micrometers; thin cap < 65 μm indicates vulnerability.
