parametric mapping

Pixel-wise quantification technique in cardiac MRI that creates color-coded maps of tissue properties such as T1, T2, or extracellular volume.

Full Definition

Parametric mapping refers to cardiovascular magnetic resonance techniques that generate pixel-by-pixel quantitative maps of intrinsic tissue properties. Common applications include T1 mapping (for fibrosis detection), T2 mapping (for edema assessment), and extracellular volume (ECV) mapping (for diffuse fibrosis quantification). These techniques provide objective, reproducible measurements that are less dependent on imaging parameters and reader interpretation compared to conventional qualitative assessment. Parametric maps are typically displayed as color-coded overlays on anatomical images, with abnormal values highlighted according to reference ranges.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the parameter being mapped (T1, T2, ECV) and reference normal ranges.

In Context

  • "Native T1 parametric mapping revealed elevated values of 1100 ms, suggesting myocardial fibrosis." — CMR report
  • "The parametric mapping protocol includes pre- and post-contrast T1 sequences for ECV calculation." — MRI protocol document
