T1 mapping
Pronunciation: T-one mapping
Quantitative MRI technique that measures native T1 relaxation times to detect diffuse myocardial fibrosis and infiltrative disease.
Full Definition
T1 mapping is a quantitative cardiac MRI technique that measures the intrinsic T1 relaxation times of myocardial tissue on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Native T1 values reflect tissue composition and can detect diffuse pathological changes such as fibrosis, edema, or infiltrative processes that may not be visible on conventional imaging. Elevated T1 times typically indicate increased extracellular space due to fibrosis or edema, while reduced values may suggest iron deposition or amyloid infiltration. The technique requires specific pulse sequences and post-processing software to generate parametric T1 maps.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from post-contrast T1 mapping, which measures T1 after gadolinium administration.
