T2 mapping
Pronunciation: T-two mapping
Quantitative MRI technique measuring tissue T2 relaxation times to detect myocardial edema and inflammation.
Full Definition
T2 mapping is a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) technique that provides pixel-wise quantification of T2 relaxation times in myocardial tissue. Elevated T2 values typically indicate tissue edema, which occurs in acute myocardial infarction, myocarditis, and other inflammatory conditions. Unlike qualitative T2-weighted imaging, T2 mapping provides objective numerical values (measured in milliseconds) that can be compared across patients and serial studies, making it valuable for monitoring disease progression and treatment response.
Usage
Usage note: Report T2 values in milliseconds; normal myocardial T2 is approximately 50-55 ms at 1.5T.
