TAPSE
Pronunciation: TAP-see
Also written as: TAPSE — tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion
Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion; echocardiographic measurement of right ventricular longitudinal function.
Full Definition
Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) is a simple, reproducible echocardiographic parameter that assesses right ventricular systolic function by measuring the displacement of the tricuspid annulus toward the cardiac apex during systole. TAPSE is obtained using M-mode echocardiography positioned at the lateral tricuspid annulus from the apical four-chamber view. Values < 17 mm suggest right ventricular dysfunction, while normal values are typically ≥ 17 mm. TAPSE is particularly useful in conditions affecting the right heart, including pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart disease, and right heart failure.
Usage
Usage note: Always report TAPSE values in millimeters; normal is ≥ 17 mm.
