Full Definition

Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is a specialized echocardiographic technique that uses Doppler principles to measure the velocity of myocardial tissue movement rather than blood flow. TDI provides quantitative assessment of regional myocardial function by measuring systolic (S') and diastolic (E', A') tissue velocities at various myocardial locations. This technique offers superior temporal resolution compared to conventional echocardiography and can detect subtle abnormalities in regional function. TDI is particularly valuable for assessing diastolic function, identifying regional ischemia, and measuring mechanical synchrony. The technique can be performed using pulsed-wave, color-coded, or speckle-tracking approaches.
