The peak velocity of blood flow across the tricuspid valve, used to estimate pulmonary artery systolic pressure.

Full Definition

TR velocity refers to the maximum velocity of tricuspid regurgitation measured by Doppler echocardiography. This measurement is crucial for estimating right heart pressures, particularly pulmonary artery systolic pressure, using the modified Bernoulli equation. Normal TR velocity is typically less than 2.8 m/s, with higher velocities suggesting elevated pulmonary pressures. The measurement requires adequate tricuspid regurgitation to generate a clear Doppler signal and proper beam alignment with the regurgitant jet. TR velocity is an important parameter in evaluating pulmonary hypertension, right heart function, and monitoring patients with various cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
