wall motion abnormality

Regional dysfunction of myocardial contraction detected on cardiac imaging studies.

Full Definition

Wall motion abnormality refers to impaired regional myocardial contraction that can be detected on echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or nuclear imaging. These abnormalities are classified as hypokinetic (reduced motion), akinetic (absent motion), or dyskinetic (paradoxical motion). Wall motion abnormalities typically correspond to areas supplied by diseased coronary arteries and can be caused by acute ischemia, previous myocardial infarction, or cardiomyopathy. Assessment of wall motion is crucial for evaluating cardiac function, determining prognosis, and guiding treatment decisions in patients with coronary artery disease.
