Full Definition

The wall motion scoring system is a standardized method for quantifying regional left ventricular function using a 16- or 17-segment model. Each segment is assigned a score: 1 = normal/hyperkinetic, 2 = hypokinetic, 3 = akinetic, 4 = dyskinetic, and 5 = aneurysmal. The wall motion score index (WMSI) is calculated as the sum of all segment scores divided by the number of segments evaluated, providing an overall assessment of global function. Normal WMSI is 1.0, with higher values indicating worse function. This system enables standardized communication of regional dysfunction and facilitates comparison between studies and institutions.
