Retrograde Injection

An injection technique in which the filler or therapeutic agent is deposited as the needle or cannula is withdrawn from the tissue, rather than on entry.

Full Definition

The retrograde injection technique involves advancing the needle or cannula to the desired depth, confirming correct placement, and then depositing the product in a controlled trail as the instrument is slowly pulled back through the tissue. This approach reduces the risk of inadvertent intravascular injection compared with anterograde bolus techniques. Editors should note that 'retrograde' always modifies the noun 'injection' or 'technique' and should not be used alone as a noun. It should not be confused with 'fanning technique' (multiple passes from a single entry point) or 'cross-hatching technique'.
