The Runway End Safety Area (RESA) is an area symmetrically disposed about the extended centreline of the runway and adjacent to the end of the runway strip. Its purpose is to reduce the risk of damage to an aircraft that undershoots, overruns, or veers off the end of the runway during landing or an aborted take-off. ICAO specifies minimum RESA dimensions based on aerodrome reference code. The RESA must be free of obstacles that could endanger aircraft and must be capable of supporting the weight of rescue and firefighting vehicles. Editors must reproduce RESA dimensions accurately, noting whether they are given in metres or feet, and ensure the term is not confused with 'clearway' or 'stopway,' which are distinct runway-associated areas.
