Arteriovenous malformation, an abnormal connection between arteries and veins that bypasses normal capillary networks.

Full Definition

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a congenital vascular anomaly characterized by abnormal direct connections between arteries and veins without an intervening normal capillary bed. This creates a high-flow, low-resistance circuit that can lead to various complications including hemorrhage, steal phenomenon affecting surrounding tissues, and progressive enlargement. AVMs can occur in various locations but are most concerning when present in the brain, where they carry significant risks of intracranial hemorrhage, seizures, and neurological deficits. Treatment options include surgical resection, endovascular embolization, stereotactic radiosurgery, or combinations of these approaches depending on the lesion's size, location, and angioarchitecture.
