distal protection device

Also written as: EPD — Embolic Protection Device

Embolic protection system deployed downstream from intervention site to capture debris released during endovascular procedures.

Full Definition

A distal protection device is an embolic protection system designed to prevent downstream embolization of atherosclerotic debris, thrombotic material, or other particulate matter during endovascular interventions. These devices typically consist of filter baskets, occlusion balloons, or aspiration systems positioned distal to the treatment site to capture liberated material that could cause end-organ damage or vessel occlusion. Common applications include carotid artery stenting, saphenous vein graft interventions, and procedures in heavily calcified or friable lesions. Device selection depends on vessel anatomy, lesion characteristics, and procedural complexity. Successful deployment and retrieval require careful attention to vessel sizing, device positioning, and debris capture efficiency.

Usage

Usage note: Document device type, deployment success, and debris capture when using embolic protection systems.
