Microembolization refers to the liberation of small particles, typically debris from atherosclerotic plaques, during endovascular procedures that can travel downstream and occlude small vessels. These microemboli can consist of platelet aggregates, cholesterol crystals, calcified material, or thrombus fragments. While individual particles may be too small to cause clinically apparent symptoms, cumulative microembolization can result in tissue dysfunction, particularly in organs with limited collateral circulation such as the brain and kidneys.
