A specific type of arteriosclerosis characterized by calcium deposition in the medial layer of muscular arteries, also known as medial sclerosis or Mönckeberg's arteriosclerosis. Unlike atherosclerosis, this condition typically does not cause significant luminal narrowing but results in increased arterial stiffness and reduced compliance. It commonly occurs with aging, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, and can be distinguished from atherosclerotic calcification by its location within the vessel wall.
