thrombolysis

The medical dissolution of blood clots using pharmacological agents or mechanical methods.

Full Definition

Thrombolysis is the therapeutic process of breaking down pathological blood clots (thrombi) that obstruct blood vessels, potentially causing ischemic complications. This can be achieved through pharmacological means using fibrinolytic agents such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), streptokinase, or newer thrombolytic drugs that activate the body's natural clot-dissolving mechanisms. Mechanical thrombolysis involves physical disruption or removal of clots using specialized devices. The procedure is time-sensitive and commonly employed in emergency treatment of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and other thrombotic emergencies. Success depends on rapid intervention and appropriate patient selection.

Usage
