Full Definition

Venous reflux refers to the abnormal retrograde flow of blood in veins caused by incompetent or damaged venous valves that fail to prevent backflow during muscle relaxation. This condition is fundamental to the pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency and can affect superficial, deep, or perforating venous systems. Reflux leads to venous hypertension, progressive venous dilation, and eventually to clinical manifestations such as varicose veins, edema, skin changes, and ulceration. Assessment typically involves duplex ultrasonography with standardized reflux time measurements.
