Full Definition

The aortic remodeling procedure, also known as the Yacoub procedure, is a valve-sparing operation that replaces the diseased aortic root with a prosthetic graft while preserving the patient's native aortic valve within its natural tissue framework. Unlike valve reimplantation, this technique maintains the native attachments of the valve commissures to the patient's own tissue rather than to the graft. The procedure involves creating three tongue-shaped extensions in the graft that conform to the anatomy of the aortic sinuses. This approach theoretically provides more physiologic valve function but may have different long-term outcomes compared to reimplantation techniques.
