aortic root abscess

Localized collection of infected material within the aortic root structures, typically associated with infective endocarditis.

Full Definition

Aortic root abscess is a serious complication of aortic valve infective endocarditis characterized by a localized collection of purulent material within the aortic root structures, including the sinuses of Valsalva, intervalvular fibrosa, or adjacent myocardium. This condition typically results from extension of valve infection into surrounding tissues and may lead to conduction abnormalities, fistula formation, or structural destruction requiring complex surgical reconstruction. Diagnosis relies on echocardiographic imaging, with transesophageal echocardiography being most sensitive. Treatment requires aggressive surgical debridement, often necessitating aortic root replacement with homografts or composite valve-conduit reconstruction.
