The DeBakey classification is a widely used system for categorizing aortic dissections developed by cardiovascular surgeon Michael DeBakey. Type I dissections involve the ascending aorta, arch, and extend into the descending aorta. Type II dissections are confined to the ascending aorta only. Type III dissections originate in the descending aorta and may extend proximally (Type IIIa) or distally (Type IIIb). This classification system is essential for determining surgical approach and urgency, as Types I and II typically require emergency surgical intervention due to involvement of the ascending aorta.
