malperfusion syndrome

Organ dysfunction resulting from compromised blood flow due to aortic dissection or other aortic pathology.

Full Definition

Malperfusion syndrome occurs when aortic dissection or other aortic pathology compromises blood flow to vital organs, resulting in ischemia and organ dysfunction. It can affect cerebral, coronary, visceral (mesenteric, renal), or peripheral circulation. The syndrome may result from static obstruction (compression of true lumen by false lumen), dynamic obstruction (intimal flap prolapse), or branch vessel involvement in the dissection process. Prompt recognition and treatment are essential to prevent irreversible organ damage.

Usage

Usage note: Specify the affected vascular territory (cerebral, coronary, visceral, or peripheral).

  • "Endovascular fenestration was performed to treat visceral malperfusion in this Type B dissection." — Operative report
