Type A aortic dissection, according to the Stanford classification, involves the ascending aorta regardless of the site of origin and represents a surgical emergency. These dissections carry high mortality if untreated, with risk of cardiac tamponade, aortic regurgitation, coronary artery compromise, and rupture. Immediate surgical intervention with replacement of the ascending aorta is the standard of care, often performed under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest.
