type B dissection

Aortic dissection that does not involve the ascending aorta, typically beginning distal to the left subclavian artery.

Full Definition

A type B dissection is an aortic dissection classified under the Stanford system where the intimal tear and subsequent false lumen formation occur in the descending thoracic aorta, distal to the left subclavian artery. Unlike type A dissections, these generally do not require immediate surgical intervention unless complicated by rupture, malperfusion, or refractory pain. Management often involves medical therapy initially, with endovascular or open surgical options reserved for complicated cases. The distinction is crucial for editorial accuracy in cardiovascular literature.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify 'type B' with lowercase 'type' and uppercase 'B' per medical convention.
