AAI pacing

Single-chamber pacing mode where the pacemaker stimulates only the atrium and senses only atrial activity.

Full Definition

AAI (Atrial-Atrial-Inhibited) pacing is a single-chamber pacing mode used in patients with sinus node dysfunction but intact AV conduction. The pacemaker electrode is placed in the right atrium, and the device both paces and senses only in the atrial chamber. When intrinsic atrial activity is sensed, the pacemaker is inhibited from delivering a stimulus. This mode is contraindicated in patients with AV block as it provides no ventricular backup pacing. AAI pacing with rate response (AAIR) includes sensors to increase pacing rate with activity.

Usage note: Always spell out as AAI, not A-A-I or aai.
