The atrioventricular (AV) node is a small mass of specialized cardiac conduction tissue located in the lower portion of the right atrium near the tricuspid valve. It serves as the primary electrical gateway between the atria and ventricles, introducing a physiological delay that allows for complete atrial emptying before ventricular contraction begins. The AV node can be the site of various arrhythmias, including AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, and may require ablation therapy in certain cases. Dysfunction of the AV node can lead to heart blocks of varying degrees.
