A dual-chamber pacemaker is an implantable cardiac rhythm management device equipped with leads positioned in both the right atrium and right ventricle, allowing for coordinated pacing of both chambers. This configuration maintains physiologic atrioventricular synchrony by sensing and pacing in both chambers according to programmed parameters. Dual-chamber systems can provide various pacing modes (DDD, DDI, VDD) and typically include rate-responsive features that adjust pacing rates based on physiologic demand. The device improves hemodynamics compared to single-chamber ventricular pacing by preserving the atrial contribution to ventricular filling and maintaining normal AV timing relationships.
