Full Definition

An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a sophisticated device designed to prevent sudden cardiac death from ventricular arrhythmias. The device continuously monitors the heart's rhythm and can deliver three types of therapy: antitachycardia pacing for ventricular tachycardia, cardioversion for fast ventricular rhythms, and defibrillation for ventricular fibrillation. Modern ICDs often include pacing capabilities and can be combined with cardiac resynchronization therapy. The device is implanted subcutaneously, typically below the left clavicle, with leads threaded through veins to the heart chambers.
