Non-invasive programmed stimulation (NIPS) is a diagnostic technique that uses external electrical stimulation applied through skin electrodes to attempt induction of arrhythmias without requiring invasive catheter placement. The procedure involves delivering precisely timed electrical impulses during the cardiac cycle to assess the heart's propensity for developing sustained arrhythmias, particularly ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. NIPS is primarily used for risk stratification in patients with structural heart disease, helping to identify those at high risk for sudden cardiac death who might benefit from implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapy. While less sensitive than invasive electrophysiology studies, NIPS offers a safer alternative for initial arrhythmia evaluation.
