Full Definition

S-ICD (Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator) represents a newer generation of defibrillator technology that delivers life-saving shock therapy through a completely subcutaneous lead system, avoiding the need for transvenous leads in the heart. The system consists of a generator implanted in the left axillary region and a subcutaneous lead tunneled along the left sternal border. S-ICDs are particularly beneficial for patients with challenging venous access, high infection risk, or desire to preserve venous integrity for future needs. However, these devices cannot provide bradycardia pacing support or cardiac resynchronization therapy, and inappropriate shock rates may be higher due to subcutaneous signal sensing challenges. Patient screening with surface ECG morphology analysis is essential to ensure appropriate sensing.
