supraventricular tachycardia

A rapid heart rhythm originating above the ventricles, typically involving the atria or AV junction.

Full Definition

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a broad category of arrhythmias characterized by rapid heart rates exceeding 150 beats per minute that originate from electrical circuits above the ventricles. Common types include atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT), atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT), and atrial tachycardia. SVTs typically present with narrow QRS complexes on ECG and often respond to vagal maneuvers or adenosine administration. While generally not life-threatening, SVTs can cause significant symptoms including palpitations, chest discomfort, and syncope.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as SVT in clinical practice.
