transesophageal echocardiogram

An ultrasound examination of the heart performed using a probe inserted into the esophagus for enhanced cardiac imaging.

Full Definition

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is a specialized cardiac ultrasound procedure where an ultrasound probe is inserted into the esophagus to obtain high-resolution images of cardiac structures from a posterior approach. The close proximity of the esophagus to the heart allows for superior visualization of the left atrium, left atrial appendage, mitral valve, and pulmonary veins compared to transthoracic echocardiography. In arrhythmia management, TEE is particularly valuable for detecting left atrial thrombi before cardioversion or catheter ablation procedures, assessing pulmonary vein anatomy, and monitoring for procedural complications such as pericardial effusion. The procedure requires conscious sedation and careful monitoring.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as TEE; emphasize indication and findings in arrhythmia contexts.
