Full Definition

Gadolinium-enhanced imaging utilizes gadolinium-based contrast agents to improve the contrast resolution and diagnostic capability of magnetic resonance angiography. Gadolinium shortens T1 relaxation time of blood, creating bright signal on T1-weighted sequences and enabling excellent visualization of vascular anatomy and pathology. This technique is particularly valuable for detecting small vessel stenoses, characterizing plaque composition, and evaluating vascular malformations. Gadolinium-enhanced MRA can be performed with various techniques including dynamic imaging to capture arterial and venous phases separately. Recent concerns about gadolinium retention have led to more judicious use, especially in patients with renal impairment.
