Anovulation

The absence of ovulation during a menstrual cycle, preventing natural conception.

Full Definition

Anovulation is a condition where the ovaries fail to release a mature egg during the menstrual cycle. This can result in irregular or absent menstrual periods and is a common cause of female infertility. Anovulation may be caused by hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, excessive exercise, or stress. Treatment typically involves ovulation induction medications such as clomiphene citrate or gonadotropins. Diagnosis is confirmed through hormonal testing, ovulation predictor kits, or transvaginal ultrasound monitoring.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from oligoovulation (infrequent ovulation) and amenorrhea (absence of menstruation).
