Antral Follicle Count

Also written as: AFC — Antral Follicle Count

The number of small follicles visible on ultrasound used to assess ovarian reserve and predict response to stimulation.

Full Definition

Antral follicle count (AFC) is a key diagnostic tool in reproductive medicine, measuring follicles 2-10mm in diameter during the early follicular phase. This non-invasive assessment provides valuable information about a woman's ovarian reserve and helps predict response to ovarian stimulation. AFC is typically performed using transvaginal ultrasound and correlates with anti-Müllerian hormone levels. Low AFC may indicate diminished ovarian reserve, while high AFC might suggest polycystic ovarian syndrome.

In Context

  • "The antral follicle count of 15 suggested good ovarian reserve for her age." — Ultrasound report
  • "AFC was performed on cycle day 3 to guide stimulation protocol selection." — Treatment planning
